About this Event
901 South College Street Auburn, Alabama 36849
https://jcsm.auburn.edu/event/artist-talk-cara-despain/Exhibiting artist Cara Despain joins guest curator of Being and Belonging in American Art: 1946/2026, Elizabeth S. Hawley, Ph.D., to discuss belonging through the lens of American art.
On view at The Jule, Despain's and the desert shall blossom as the rose features antique uranium‑tinted Depression glass arranged inside a mirrored structure. Under UV light, the glass glows an eerie radioactive green, and the mirror creates an infinity effect, making the glowing objects appear to multiply endlessly. Despain’s work frequently investigates the environmental and political legacy of uranium mining, nuclear testing and the hidden histories of the American West.
